A tiny fragment of an actuality film of Tom Merry (William Mechem), a 'lightning sketch' caricaturist performing his act for the camera and producing a large profile caricature of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The loss of the rest of the film has bequeathed us 6 seconds that are of Mechem standing next to the completed portrait and sadly, that is all there is. An early film made by Birt Acres for R.W. Marc Chagall – Between Two Worlds (2020)
Marc Chagall was an artist caught between two worlds, between traditional art and modernism, figuration and abstraction. The film accompanies him on an important stage of his life from 1910 to 1930, between Paris and Vitebsk. Chagall's home town was a laboratory for the artistic avant-garde in Belarus, while Paris was the center of modern art movements.
Re-enactment (2000)
For this work Alÿs purchased a gun in Mexico City then walked through the city streets with the weapon in his hand. After eleven minutes he was arrested by the police. The following day he repeated the action, this time in cooperation with the police. By presenting a record of this dramatic action alongside footage of its reenactment, Alÿs blurs the boundaries between documentation and fiction. Questioning the concept of authenticity, this work demonstrates “how media can distort and dramatize the immediate reality of a moment,” the artist has said.
